Client: The Gist, e-newsletter (SPEC)

Challenge: Create a full email newsletter for The Gist. Include an introduction, three sections of 300 words or less (the shorter, the better), and the Gist Picks section. Write this newsletter without input from the Gist team and try to match the brand voice.

Approach: The aim of the Gist e-newsletter is to bring easily digestible and straightforward content that covers women’s and men’s sports equally. Get "the gist" of what's happening in the sports world in less than 5 minutes.

I used the latest newsletter from the Gist as a template to match the brand voice as closely as possible - puns and all! Keeping the sentences short and sweet, I got to the root of the story as quickly as possible and made sure to include all of the details that I would want to know as a fan of that sport.

Client: The Sponsor, web article

Challenge: The creator of a new online publication is adding to the library of content now that the site has launched. I proposed the topic of reasons for investing in women’s sports because of the Women’s World Cup coming in the summer of 2023. They requested a longer 800-1000 word article.

Approach: The aim of the publication is to provide sponsorship marketing professionals with practical tips and expert insights to make their campaigns more impactful and increase their return on investment. We wanted to provide a clear message with concrete takeaways which is how we settled on the numbered format of the article.

I researched the different publications and organizations for publicly available quotations and data to provide authority and legitimacy to the article. I then utilized a professional tone to address the topic. I made sure to stay away from giving too much data and I wanted to make clear the reasons for businesses and brands investing in women’s sports rather than simply supporting women’s sports.

Web Articles

Client: The Sponsor, web article

Challenge: The creator of a new online publication wanted to create a library of content in advance of the launch of the website. One topic they proposed was regarding the different types of memory and how they relate to sponsorship in sports. They requested a short 500-750 word article that provided engaging content with plenty of practical takeaways.

Approach: The aim of the publication is to provide sponsorship marketing professionals with practical tips and expert insights to make their campaigns more impactful and increase the return on their investment. With this in mind, I researched the background information for the article and then utilized a professional, borderline academic, tone to address the requested topic. I made sure to clearly share the link between the psychological aspect and the commercial aspect of the topic and communicate how this is relevant to the audience.

Client: TrailSisters.net, web article

Challenge: Trail Sisters sent out an email to their online community requesting volunteers to contribute articles for their website. As contributors, writers are asked to share topics they have a personal tie to. Articles are aimed at inspiring and empowering the Trail Sisters community.

Approach: I wrote this article in an informal, first-person style given it was about my mental health journey coming back from injury. The audience I was writing for was a similar demographic to myself; women aged 25-50 who are outdoor enthusiasts and enjoy moving their bodies in nature. Given that the Trail Sister’s mission is to inspire, educate, and empower, I wrote the majority of the article in an aspirational but relatable tone and included a short list of tangible takeaways for the reader.

Client: US Soccer, Post-match Report (SPEC)

Challenge: Write an engaging post-match report summarizing and analyzing the 1999 Women’s World Cup Final. Write this report in the voice of US Soccer but convey the highlights and the impact of the match.

Approach: The aim of the post-match write-up for US Soccer is to report on the most important matches for the association in an engaging but matter-of-fact voice.

I used a traditional outline for a post-match write up, including an introduction, a match summary, key moments, impact and quotes from relevant parties. I conveyed the facts of the match along with the impact the match had on the wider landscape of women’s soccer - all of the details that I would want to know as a fan of that sport.

Client: Moves Not Unlike Jaggar, blog post

Challenge: In an effort to diversify the topics on this blog site, I was tasked with writing a post that related to my personal field of study, Football Industries, or the business side of soccer.

Approach: With my experience working on the sponsorship teams at Liverpool Football Club and Manchester United Football Club, I wanted to address the topic of supporter loyalty and how that plays a part in the commercialization of soccer globally. As this pertains to more of a professional audience, I chose to use professional language but kept a personable tone in order to make the information more accessible due to the various types of readers that frequent the blog site.
